A real and emotional problem many people face: what to do when encountering a lost or stray animal? Animals tug at our heartstrings, and we wanted to turn that moment of heartache into a moment of action.

Problem: The process of reporting, rescuing, and connecting lost/stray animals with shelters remains inefficient, inaccessible, and discourages public involvement.

Research:

What

How

Who

  • Help users locate resources easily

  • Verified No-Kill environments

  • Streamlining resources

  • Ease of use for users

  • Interviews: Five 1:1 interviews

  • Survey: Over 10 responses gathered via Google Form

  • Sample size: 4-5 participants

  • Demographics: 25 - 40 years old

Solution: By leveraging location-based data, Lend a Paw, can quickly pinpoint the user’s position and identify nearby animal shelters, rescue organizations, and relevant community resources. This not only speeds up the process of finding help but also increases the chances of reuniting pets with their owners.

Would you consider reporting a stray animal to a shelter or local authority?

Affinity Diagram: This affinity diagram was developed using insights gathered from user interviews. Key themes and categories were identified to organize the feedback, allowing us to better understand user needs, uncover patterns, and gain a clearer view of the overall experience.

User Journey:

Scenario: Ashley, a devoted animal lover, is passionate about making a difference in the lives of lost and stray animals. She frequently encounters stray cats and dogs behind her apartment and is eager to help. However, despite her good intentions, Ashley often feels overwhelmed by the lack of centralized resources, the challenges of locating available shelters, and the constraints of shelter capacity in her area.

Opportunities: Ashley wants to ensure the dog finds a safe and happy home. While she’d like to help, it’s important that doing so doesn’t cause too much stress for her own dog. She's looking for a reliable resource to guide her toward the best possible outcome and would like to find the closest shelter or rescue where she can bring the dog.

  • Real-time databases

  • Specific accounts are needed to access

  • Private-based companies that may require payment for additional access

  • They educate their users on top of supporting animals

  • More public/community oriented (i.e. more user reviews, involvement)

  • Less known

  • Not global

User Flow:

I was responsible for developing the early stages of the user flow chart for the app's lost and found pet feature, focusing on the initial user interactions.

Low-fi:

At this stage of the app's concept begins to take shape, with a focus on simplicity and minimal clicks for a smoother user experience.

Mid-fi User Testing:

User 1

Prompt: Remember Password

Results: User 1 was able to reset their password and quickly.

Summary: While watching the user, I had noticed that they would click the logo as a way to get to the homescreen. Will take the information and implement it into the design.

User 2

Prompt: Report Lost Pet

Results: User 2 slowly went through the screens and carefully read through each step.

Summary: After watching the user complete the task, I asked them how they felt about the experience. While it was their first time filling out the report, they thought it was easy and fast to fill out.

Test It Yourself

Next Steps:

  • Expanding the map feature, educational tools, and the check status feature

  • More integration with social media platforms

  • To be able to set up additional collaboration with shelters

  • Building more intuitive profiles for the shelters and an instant alert system to be set up
